Tracy Woodrow Harrelson was born on July 23, 1961, in Midland, Texas, to hitman Charles Voyde Harrelson and clerk Diane. Along with his two brothers, Jordan and Brett, who both became actors, he was brought up in a Calvinist home.

For the murder of federal judge John H. Wood Jr. in 1979, their father was given a life term. According to Harrelson, his father wasn’t always present when he was a kid. On March 15, 2007, Charles passed away at the Administrative Maximum Facility of the United States Prison.

The income of Harrelson’s mother was crucial to the survival of his family. In 1973, he relocated to Lebanon, Ohio, the hometown of his mother, where he enrolled and eventually finished Lebanon High School in 1979. He worked at Kings Island during the 1979 summer season.

Harrelson studied English and drama at Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana. He made acquaintances with Mike Pence, the future vice president, while a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity there. His graduation was in 1983.
