Paul W. Smith (born 1954) is a talk radio broadcaster and writer in the United States. He presently does the morning programme on WJR radio in Detroit, Michigan, and co-hosts the weekly show Destination 313, which airs on the station’s sister station WJR-FM. Smith’s presentations are known for including in-depth interviews with a wide range of famous individuals, including politicians, novelists, and corporate executives in the automobile sector, among other things. His maternal ancestors came to the United States from Lebanon, while Smith’s father, William D. Smith, comes from a family that includes members of the Dutch, English, and Irish ancestry. Smith’s grandmother, Marie Boutros, was pregnant with Smith’s mother, Marie Boutros, while on a boat journey from Lebanon to the United States. William D. Smith, who died in 2007 at the age of 80, was an insurance agent who also served as the director of a community theatre. Paul W. Smith was born and reared in Monroe, Michigan, the youngest of three children. He received his high school diploma from St. Mary Catholic Central High School in Monroe and his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan. He contributes to The Detroit News via a column. Smith started his broadcasting career in Toledo, Ohio, anchoring both radio and television shows. He has also aired programmes on the New York City radio stations WABC and WMCA. Smith began doing the morning programme at Philadelphia’s WWDB radio station in 1990. Smith has been the host of the current show on WJR since 1996, when he took over for the renowned J.P. McCarthy, who died in the same year. His morning show has routinely been recognised as the number one radio programme in the Detroit metropolitan area. Smith appears as a guest host on The Rush Limbaugh Program, a nationally syndicated talk show broadcast on WJR. Smith is also a regular contributor to The Rush Limbaugh Show. Smith also co-hosts the weekly show Destination 313 on WJR, which investigates landmarks and spotlights community concerns in the city of Detroit and airs on the station’s digital channel. Besides hosting, Smith serves as the Detroit area head of the Police Athletic League and is a member of the organization’s national board of directors. A large portion of the money raised by his annual “Pals for PAL” golf event goes to support local PAL initiatives. Since the 13th of March, 2006, Smith has been writing a Monday column for the Detroit News, in which he primarily draws inspiration from the work of former Detroit Free Press writer Bob Talbert.
