Celine Has a Brand New, Very Luxe, Bag

October 2024 · 2 minute read

Hedi Slimane is back with a brand new bag for Celine, and it hits all the haute notes the designer is known for. The Maroquinerie collection, available in the brand's 16 and Triomphe styles, is made of crocodile accented with 18-karat gold and assembled to order by a single artisan.

The 16, Slimane's first bag design for Celine, has a classic structured frame and top flap creating an overall 1960s vibe. In the Maroquinerie collection, it requires 17 hours of craftsmanship, created from Niloticus crocodile, and complete with hand-stitched handles and an interior mirror. The Triomphe (another one of Slimane's first creations for the maison) is a larger style that takes 12 hours to create.

Each bag is made using centuries-old techniques unique to each tanner‚ including polishing the leather with an agate stone as a glazing process. Celine's worked with the International Crocodilian Farmers Association, a non-profit that has developed formal standards for crocodile and animal farms addressing animal welfare, sustainable production, and scientific research.

Available in 14 hues, including shades of black, grey, beige, purple, mauve, petrol blue, chestnut, and emerald green, the color range is inspired by the history of France, French artists, architecture, and the decorative arts. Hardware is available in 18K white or yellow gold, and if none of this sounds nearly luxe enough for you, you can add pavé or solitaire settings to the closure of each bag.
