Michael Koman is an award-winning American writer and producer. He is also well-known as the husband of actress Ellie Kemper.
Personal Life, Parents and Family Details :
- Michael was born on February 2, 1977, in San Diego, California.
- Little is known about his parents except they had Jewish origins, and that his father was a Dr Gerald “Jerry” Koman.
- In his teenage years, Michael moved with his family to La Jolla in San Diego. They lived a mile away from The Comedy Store.
- He got a job at the store answering telephones and making reservations. There he learned comedy with his manager, Fred Burns.
- Michael became interested in comedy, and regularly did stand-ups at The Comedy Store.
Jobs & Beginning of Comedy Career :
- Koman continued doing stand-up comedy during his college years in LA, usually at The Improv.
- There he met Todd Glass & Steve Rosenthal & they even made a comedy skit called Todd’s Coma. They sent the skit to HBO Workspace, which eventually found its way to MADtv. It was Michael’s first job.
Married Life and Children :
- Michael is married to American comedian and actress for the Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Ellie Kemper. They wedded in 2012.
- They met while she was an intern at The Conan O’Brien Show & Michael was a writer there
- They have a son together, named James Miller Koman, born in 2012.
- They debated whether to bring up their son as a Jew or Catholic, since Ellie was Catholic.
- Michael and Ellie eventually had a mutual agreement. When James was 10-months old, he was baptised a Catholic.
Professional Timeline : Great Writing Career
- Michael begun his writing career with MADtv in 1999.
- At MADtv, he met Greg Cohen, who had written for Conan for some years.
- Michael really enjoyed Greg’s style of comedy, and the two became close friends. He taught Michael how to write shows that he himself would enjoy, and recommended him to Conan.
- He remained at Late Night with Conan O’Brien for seven years, until the show had to be relocated to Los Angeles. It was around this time that he was offered a position by Demetri Martin as head writer for Important Things with Demetri Martin, which was still based in New York then.
- In 2011, he co-created the action-comedy television series Eagleheart, which aired for 3 seasons.
- He also did Nathan for You in 2013 together with Nathan Fielder. The show’s most popular episode was called Dumb Starbucks, in which they transformed a struggling coffee shop into a Starbucks rip-off.
- He also wrote the Triumph’s Election Special episode in 2016 for Triumph the Insult Comic Dog comedy series.

- Michael was nominated for multiple awards in various categories, and has won 6 awards to date, most significantly a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program in 2007.
